Gather with YOUR Chicago American Indian Community for the 64th Annual American Indian Center Powwow!
To our Chicago community, we would not be here without you!
The 64th Annual Powwow will be held on September 16, 2017 from 11 am to 8 pm at 3401 W. Ainslie Street Chicago, IL 60625. This year, we will honor our Chicago community members that have supported us through the years especially during our move.
Much has changed in 64 years. Families move away and new families arrive, organizations change or move, presidents and mayors have come and gone. Regardless of change, we as a community will always gather every year to celebrate Life with Native music, dance, and culture.
We are calling on our community members, family, and friends to join us at our new building for this historic first powwow in our new home. Tradition has it that everybody has a role in helping fill our new home with friendship, love, and laughter as experienced on Wilson Avenue.
As with every powwow, this will be a good time and place to reunite with family, rekindle relationships or make a new one i.e. snag. If you have kids or a tiny tot, now is the time to finish working on regalia so your little ones will be ready to Enter the Circle for the first time carrying on tradition. For Elders and Mentors, now is the time to school the younger generation on protocol, songs, and dance steps. Remember to take plenty of pictures and videos because this 64th Annual Powwow will be (as young people say) lit!
Food vending will be available for those of you looking to get your fill of Indian tacos. For those of you looking to buy a pair of Native made earrings or jewelry, Native artists and vendors will be on site. Let’s face it, there are not many scenes around Chicago where you can find an authentic Native American cultural experience.
We are calling on community members and friends to make a donation to the 64th Annual Powwow fund. These donations will go toward covering the expense of having a powwow and toward paying our dancers and drum. Our goal is to deliver the best powwow without going into debt. Please donate.
Hey Chicago, it’s powwow time!
